While the close of the 2021 season of Formula Drift has brought about a lot of changes to the series, looking over the field of newcomers and challengers — not to mention the entire field of Pro-Spec competitors not profiled here — we can’t help but feel optimistic for the future of this young and exciting motorsport.

Formula DRIFT Is Auto Racing’s Hottest New Property
The only motorsport based on judging, the winning drivers are ones chosen as most consistent, aggressive and dominant. And unlike other domestic motorsports, when it rains, they run. In fact, a wet track is just another variable for drivers. The first event of the 2021 season was held at the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in May. With an elevation change of nearly six stories and a 1,000-foot entry into the first turn, allowing for lots of acceleration, the course is a favorite of fans and drivers. In addition to the racing, the Atlanta Formula DRIFT event is becoming legendary for its tailgating scene.

Drift Racer Pays Tribute to Carroll Shelby
Champion Brands, a manufacturer of racing and performance products, announced Jonathan Nerren’s new race livery, a tribute to Carroll Shelby’s classic liveries. Nerren will be utilizing Champion’s line of motor oils specifically formulated to meet the demands of today’s high-performance competition vehicles in the Formula DriftSeries.
“We wanted the new model Shelby Mustang to look like Carroll had been racing the car, kicking Ferrari’s ass of course,” says Nerren, “then he parked it in a field to sit for the last 50 years.”
Carroll Shelby tribute fit for the king
Jonathan tells us that the Ingot Silver, 2017 Mustang GT was intentionally purchased to be his daily driver. That didn’t last long! With the SEMA crunch in full swing, Justin Tambasco had a two-week timeline in which to finish the full SuperSnake wide body conversion on the Mustang. That timeline quickly got shortened to just six days! After the wide body had been installed, Jason from Just the Dipz worked his magic and added the Plasti-Dip livery to the Mustang. While the Plasti-Dip was still wet, Nerren and his team got to work installing all the modifications to make this Mustang a real monster on the track!
